Ian Tong, MD

Ian guides Foresite Lab’s clinical care delivery strategy and advises the Foresite Capital Management investment team on related portfolio companies.
Ian spent the last decade as an evangelist for improving access to care through the use of technology and digital health tools. He co-founded the medical group at Doctor On Demand, a national telemedicine practice and was responsible for designing, building and leading the virtual care practice which received the UCSF Digital Health Award for Best Telemedicine Company in 2019. When Doctor On Demand merged with Grand Rounds to form Included Health, Ian oversaw the integration of the roughly ~1200-clinician professional corporation as Chief Medical Officer of the combined company. Previously, Ian served as Clinical Assistant Professor(Affiliated) at Stanford Medical School for 17 years and as Medical Director of Veterans Outreach at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System where his THRIVE program received the VA Secretary Award for Outstanding Achievement for Service to Homeless Veterans.
Ian is board certified in Internal Medicine and received his medical degree from The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed residency training at Stanford where he was honored to serve as Chief Resident. He has an undergraduate degree in English and a minor in Ethnic Studies. He is passionate about health equity and the use of technology as an equity platform to democratize health care.
